As a property investor, you’ll be interested to see the latest data on what the most popular type of unit and house is among renters. 

According to PropTrack, the most sought-after types of houses nationally in the 12 months to May 2024 were four bedrooms, two bathrooms and two parking spaces.  

For units, the most popular configuration nationally was two bedrooms, one bathroom and one parking spot.  

But, changes in the data over time show smaller homes are becoming more popular with renters.  

“There’s more people searching for one-bed units and more people searching for two-bed houses,” said PropTrack senior economist Paul Ryan. 

Relative affordability seemed to be the driving factor as tough rental conditions have pushed renters to compromise on space in favour of cost. 

“If there was more cheaper rental accommodation, people would spread out and want their own space,” said Mr Ryan.
