Is it smarter to invest in houses or apartments?
Well, Ray White’s chief economist, Nerida Conisbee, analysed the returns from a $500,000 investment in 2014 to see which option would have performed better today.
Nationally, houses outperformed apartments, with an 84% increase versus 40%.
But location is key.
In Sydney, houses nearly doubled in value, while apartments saw just a 37% bump. Yet, in spots like Upper Coomera and parts of Canberra, apartments actually outperformed houses.
The takeaway? Investing in property isn’t just about choosing between a house or apartment – it’s about picking the right location.
That’s because while land holds value (and owning more of it should therefore yield better returns) local factors always tip the scales.
